Stella Bugbee presents her varied career through a wide breadth of work this week at Design Remixed. In the spirit of curiosity, we’re asking her a few questions in advance.
Stella, you’ve been in New York for all of your design career. What do you think about the design community here?
I love how there is a real continuum between the generations. And a real generosity.
It is certainly a supportive community. Where do you turn for inspiration?
Inspiration comes from everything—I keep binders full of things I love, then look at them when I need
inspiration. I believe in letting yourself go off on tangents. That is the best way to find unexpected inspiration.
What’s most interesting to you in the design world right now in terms of economic forces or movements developing?
The design world is just part of the rest of the world. I don’t separate it in my thinking.
Do you remember the moment when you first realized you wanted to design?
Yes. I was looking at Raygun magazine and I thought, “I want to make something like this.”
What was it about the magazine that drew you in? Did you end up making work that you felt was influence by Raygun?
No, my work looks nothing like Raygun and never has. I was completely seduced by the idea of magazines—being able to create an experience with words.
What part of the design process do you find most fulfilling?
Coming up with ideas! My favorite parts are always the beginning and the end.
And I have to ask, where’s the best brunch in the city?
Blueberry pancakes at my house! Come on over.
