Working in an international design mecca like New York City often means the best and brightest might not be from around here.

Working in an international design mecca like New York City often means the best and brightest might not be from around here. Whether you are a foreign national designer, currently on a visa but looking to change status or a hiring manager interested in a non-US resident, there are legal steps you need to take before you can start work. And it’s a process that is in constant flux as the laws change based on influences such as who’s in office, perceived terror threats and the US economy’s strength.

That’s where Lindsay Curicio, Attorney at Law and Adjunct Professor, New York Law School, can help clarify the process, identity common problems and mistakes and provide strategies on how best to navigate an at best anxious experience. If this sounds like you, you need to be at this last Breakfast Club of the season: your career depends on it!

Lindsay A. Curcio, Attorney
Lindsay has practiced immigration law since 1990. She is a sole practitioner in Brooklyn, New York and an adjunct professor at New York Law School. Her practice includes employment-based and family-based nonimmigrant and immigrant visas as well as waivers, removal defense, U.S. citizenship issues and naturalization. With Lenni Benson, Veronica Jeffers and Stephen Yale-Loehr, she is a co-author of Immigration and Nationality Law: Problems and Strategies (LexisNexis). She is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and serves on committees for the national office, New York Chapter and Rome District Chapter. She was co-director of New York Law School’s Justice Action Center’s Safe Passage Immigration Project from 2007 to 2012. Lindsay has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Northwestern University, a juris doctor degree from IIT-Chicago Kent College of Law, an MBA (concentration in marketing with international business designation) from Fordham University and an LLM in Transnational Commercial Practice at the Center for International Legal Studies/Lazarski University. Lindsay may be reached via her Facebook page or Twitter @lindsayvisa.

If volunteering your time to inspire and encourage a creative high school student sounds awesome to you, then become a mentor!

If volunteering your time to inspire and encourage a creative high school student sounds awesome to you, then become a mentor! Many mentors say it is one of the most rewarding activities they do.

To learn more about the specifics of the program, hear from current mentors and have all your questions answered, join us on Tuesday, June 10th for an information session.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Founded in 1993, the AIGA/NY Mentoring Program’s mission is to provide creative youth with opportunities and tools to achieve their goals. The program pairs volunteer chapter members with talented students from the New York City High School of Art and Design.

The Mentoring Program kicks off every fall and gives professionals the chance to make a difference in the life of an ambitious young artist. Mentors and students are asked to make a 3-year commitment — with pairs meeting in the student’s sophomore year and continuing through graduation. Mentor student pairs meet one-on-one with a goal of spending four hours together every month. Pairs are invited to participate in planned programming but are also encouraged to meet independently to develop a relationship that is uniquely suited to them. The program provides opportunities for students and mentors to attend unique events with leaders in the industry. Past partners have included, Debbie Millman, Michael Bierut, James Victore, Triboro Design, Etsy, The Green Patriot Poster project and World Studio.

The High School of Art and Design is one of New York City’s many specialty high schools. Students are accepted to the school after submitting a portfolio at the end of middle school. The students that elect to participate in the program are driven and excited by the arts. The high school has a wide range of majors from Graphic Design, to Illustration, Fashion Design and Architecture. The AIGA/NY Mentoring Program works with students in all majors.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

New mentor applications are due on June 30th, 2014. You can jump start the application process by filling out and submitting your application at the event.

A series that presents influential young designers who are building practices in new ways.

Jessica Green and Tom Griffiths of Everything Studio are the fifth speakers in AIGA/NY’s series in collaboration with the Museum of Arts and Design, Owner at Self: Adaptive and Innovative Design Practices. They first met at Pratt Institute in 2000 when they were graphic design students. In 2004 Tom went on to receive an MFA at Yale, while Jessica started a design company in New York. In 2007 they partnered and began designing under the name Everything Studio.

Working within the art and culture sector, their multidisciplinary practice focuses on publications, custom typography, graphic identities, and websites. Recent clients include BOMB magazine, Cabinet magazine, Studio Voltaire, Studio Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Verso Books, and Futurepoem. In 2012, ‘Curiosity and Method: Ten Years of Cabinet Magazine’ was featured in book and cover categories of Design Observer’s 50 Books / 50 Covers. Tom currently teaches a Senior Thesis class at Parsons, The New School.

OWNER AT SELF: ADAPTIVE AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN PRACTICES
Economic and technological upheavals of the last few years have challenged traditional notions of the design office. The Great Recession has made overhead a liability and long-term contracts less accessible; social media and the proliferation of image blogs allow designers to gain sizable followings overnight; and the desire to create meaningful and self-directed work has encouraged designers to look beyond billable hours to other forms of recompense.

In addition to showing their work, the designers featured in Owner at Self will share the adaptive and innovative strategies they’ve developed that allow them to make the work they want to make. Some initiate their own projects while others form geographically dispersed partnerships; some seek out alternative funding sources while others adapt their professional lives to their personal ones; all are taking the entrepreneurial risk to build practices that new conditions require.

THIS SERIES IS PRODUCED IN COLLABORATION WITH:

In this Small Talk during NYxDesign Week, Stian Krosby and Anne Lewison from Snøhetta New York will unpack the office’s design philosophy and introduce highlights of Snøhetta’s design projects.

Snøhetta is an international design firm with offices in Oslo, Norway and New York City. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original trans-disciplinary approach, integrating architectural, landscape, graphic design and interior design in all of its projects. The past 25 years, Snøhetta has designed some of the world’s most notable public and cultural projects including the competition-winning entry for the new library of Alexandria, Egypt, the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City, among many others.

Snøhetta is currently working on a number of educational, civic and cultural projects in North America including the expansion of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California, the Westchester Branch Library in the Bronx and Far Rockaway Public Library in Queens, and the redevelopment of Times Square in New York City, currently under construction.

Balance is a primary principle of Snøhetta’s practice. For corporate clients, national cultural institutions, and international brands, Snøhetta’s output in architecture, print, branding, wayfinding and environment design reflects a classically Scandinavian path from concept and outcome, an equilibrium between form and function, work and life. The office’s engaging hands-on dialog with clients is a critical, unique part of their methodology. In this Small Talk during NYxDesign Week, Stian Krosby and Anne Lewison from Snøhetta New York will unpack the office’s design philosophy and introduce highlights of Snøhetta’s design projects.

Stian Krosby is Project Director for Brand Design at Snøhetta, New York. His clients include World Trade Center, Queens University, Royal Norwegian Consulate, Norwegian Postal Service, The Norwegian Opera, Veidekke, Visit Voss, Visit Lillehammer, Wilh. Wilhemsen, WWL, Hydro, Rottefella, Jøtul, Telenor, Norske Skog, Innovation Norway.

Anne Lewison AIA is the senior architect and Project Manager for the WTC Museum Pavilion by Snøhetta, New York. She directed the team on all aspects of this project from 2007 to the public opening in May of 2014. Other projects with Snohetta include SLAM – Streb Lab of Action Mechanics. She also is a Board Member of cultureNOW.org Museum without Walls, an award winning cultural mapping app.

We are preparing an amazing showcase of AIGA/NY’s special initiatives at the new venue of Industry City in Sunset Park, invited by our friends at Wanted Design. Here is what our presence will cover:

DESIGN/RELIEF INITIATIVE RESULTS UNVEILED

SAT MAY 17, 5PM, at Industry City, Building 2, we will feature a special program with our Design/Relief team members in dialog with their community partners to discuss the transformative power of design in making those communities more visible, legible and navigable places. The conversation will address how design has impacted the places, the people, the dynamics between various groups in those places. RSVP to come soon.

GRAPHIC DESIGNERS MADE VISIBLE

This is the time and place for graphic designers to be visible, and be part of the city-wide festival of design, which has historically be more driven by the furniture design industry. While the national AIGA celebrates its 100th Anniversary, the NY chapter features on its 32nd birthday an incredibly thriving community of designers, active participants, engaged curators and impresarios of design in the city. Let’s celebrate AIGA/NY’s design impact, demonstrated by the way we:

- Connect professional designers and students with ideas, information and each other
- Advocate for design within the civil and cultural life of New York City
- Lead collaborative projects with local communities
- Champion excellent work and sharing innovative practices.

Whether we love them, hate them, or try to ignore them, fashion images have a profound impact on our society. The imagery created for fashion houses and brands extends beyond the commercial realm to shape our popular culture and visual sensibilities. Fashion leaders depend on professional image makers to tell their stories, connect the dots creatively, and build their businesses. This panel brings together three creative directors whose images have brought global attention to the influential artists and design houses they work with. Each will present work from the past/present/future and speak to the explosive intersection of design and fashion.

The panel will be moderated by Stella Bugbee, Editorial Director of New York magazine’s the Cut.
