INSPIRE / MAKE
FREE WORKSHOPS FOR TEENS
AN AIGA/NY INITIATIVE

Our Inspire/Make Teen Program is a series of free weekend classes for high-school (grades 9-12) students who want to learn how to design and develop digital and electronic media. We’ll cover a breadth of disciplines, including graphic design for digital interfaces, creating apps and content for mobile and tablets, and physical prototyping with electronic components.

Our collaborator is Brooklyn Public Library’s T4 program: Today’s Teens, Tomorrow’s Techies (T4) is a volunteer program in which teens, aged 14-18, receive free technology training as preparation for collaborating with Brooklyn Public Library staff to enhance the Library’s service to the public. The T4s serve by teaching, mentoring and sharing knowledge with staff and patrons. In addition to volunteering at the library and assisting patrons, the T4s receive trainings such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft Publisher, Hardware Upgrade & Repair, Podcasting, Audacity DJ, Animation, and Lego NXT Robotics. Currently in its 8th year of operation, the program has engaged 1000 teens to date.

If you’d like to be involved to teach a workshop, support future workshops as a sponsor, or have any additional questions regarding the program, please contact Stacey Panousopoulos, AIGA/NY Chapter Manager at email hidden; JavaScript is required.

Making and Publishing an iBook (about Brooklyn Public Library)

Instructor: Carla Echevarria
Description: Using a few simple apps on the iPad, students will write, design, and publish their own storybooks. Using inspiration from the Brooklyn Library, they will learn to use a basic word editor to write a simple story, a painting app to create illustrations, the iPad camera to take photos, a photo manipulation app to crop and recolor photos, and then an app like BookCreator to put it all together into a book format. The final product will be “published” to the Apple iBook store, where their friends and family can buy a copy.
