On Thursday, April 12, don’t miss a one-of-a-kind presentation in New York of Los Angeles’s recent Eames Words exhibition. The exhibition, part of the “Pacific Standard Time” series, is an unprecedented typographic and dimensional demonstration of the Eames’s ideas and daily lives. The exhibition will be presented and discussed for the first time in New York by Deborah Sussman, who led the exhibition’s curatorial and design team together with Andrew Byrom. Rather than display the Eames’s famous furniture, the team was inspired by (quoting Charles Eames) “the uncommon beauty of common things,” and the exhibition explores the idea of “taking your pleasures seriously.” Roberta Smith in the New York Times described the exhibition as “like being inside the designers’ heads.”
Sussman is a former long-time member of the Eames staff. She is the founder of Sussman/Prejza, a pioneering firm in environmental design and urban branding which led the design team for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Sussman is an AIGA medalist and a founder of the AIGA’s Los Angeles chapter. She is a nominee for a Lifetime Achievement Award and Design Mind in the upcoming 2012 National Design Awards, together with her husband and partner Paul Prejza. Interviews with Sussman are also featured in the recent film, “Eames: The Architect and the Painter.”
Join us for this rare discussion of an important Los Angeles exhibition and of life in the Eames Office! Great for fans and students of the Eameses, of design history, of exhibition design, and of Los Angeles design. Space is limited.
