1/ Game Change in the Design of Retailing

Jane and Benjamin Thompson, collaborated for two decades on a book called Design Research. Michael Bierut moderates a discussion with leading innovators in the design of retail environments, including Glen Senk (Urban Outfitters), Rob Forbes (Public), and Jenna Lyons (J.Crew Group). Jane Thompson, a critical voice in design and founding editor of I.D. magazine, is being honored with a 2010 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement. Copies of the book will be available for sale.

3/ Small Talk No. 1: Ian Wright

Ian Wright will share and discuss his beautifully crafted, uniquely collaged portraits, and many of his other forward-thinking images. A Londoner currently based in NYC, Wright has been making portraits across art and design since 1978 for clients such as Vitra, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nike and Issey Miyake.

4/ Paper to Pixels 2.0: iPad Apps

What lessons have we learned from the first wave of tablet apps? With the advent of the iPad, magazines are facing the challenge of translating their content and design from printed page to tablet screen. Moderated by Josh Klenert, a panel of designers, D.W. Pine (Time Magazine), Geraldine Hessler (Glamour), Michael Lawton (Popular Mechanics), Peter Herbert, (Popular Mechanics), and Joe Zeff (Joe Zeff Design), share insight and experiences of developing for this new platform.

5/ Beyond Madison Avenue: Corporate Members’ Exhibition

Change the way NYC views the rest of the advertising world. Beyond Madison Avenue is an exhibition of new works from The One Club Corporate Members located outside of New York City.

6/ Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio

Hale County, Alabama is home to some of the most impoverished communities in the United States of America. It is also home to Auburn University’s Rural Studio, one of the most prolific and inspirational design-build outreach programs ever established. Citizen Architect is a documentary film chronicling the late Samuel Mockbee, artist, architect, educator and founder of the Rural Studio with never-before-seen interviews with Mockbee himself. Director Sam Wainwright will be available for a Q&A.

7/ Wood Type in the Digital Age: Nick Sherman

Designers and letterpress printers have been expanding on the paradigms of wood type in recent years, incorporating new technologies or expanding on typographic technique. Through a survey of contemporary wood type inspired design, printing, and preservation, typographer Nick Sherman of Font Bureau will discuss how forward thinking typographers are clearing the dust off the concept of wood type and bringing it new life in the 21st century. Sherman serves on the advisory board for the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum and is the editor of Woodtyper, an online journal focusing on wood type and related topics. 8/ Fall Paper and Printing Expo

Collect the latest swatch books, print samples and production tips. Participants include: Actualizers, Aldine, Appleton Coated, Cordenos Paper, Domtar, Earth Color, Imago, Meridian, Modern Postcard, Mohawk, My Emma, Precise Continental, Sappi, Scheufelen, Structural Graphics, and Taylor Box. Students are invited to pick up samples on Friday, September 24th, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

9/ SPD Student Pub(lications) Crawl

Start the school year on the right! Spend a day in the office of stellar magazines for an in-depth look at the way things really work. This year’s tours features Family Circle, Martha Stewart Living, The New York Times Magazine, People, Popular Mechanics and Teen Vogue magazines offering behind-the-scenes access to student guests.
