1/ Book Talk: Bicycle Diaries: Conversation with David Byrne

The bicycle is the world’s most commonly used form of transportation. Since the early 1980s, David Byrne, co-founder of the Talking Heads, has been riding one as his primary means of getting around in New York City and on tour overseas. The Book Talks are a forum for dialogue and discussion, and copies of the publications are available for sale and signing. Bicycle Diaries is an eye-opening celebration of seeing the world at bike level from one of the most original artists on the scene today.

2/ Movable Type with Kyle Durrie

Talk and demonstration of letterpress printing with Kyle Durrie.

When: Monday, October 24, 2011, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Where: Type Directors Club, 347 West 36 Street, Suite 603, NYC

Price: $20 TDC members, $30 general public

3/ Projection and Reception

Founded in 1986, Reiser + Umemoto’s New York City-based practice has an international collection of projects, yet considers each as the continuation of an ongoing inquiry, delving into relationships between architecture, territory, and systems of distribution. Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto, principals of Reiser + Umemoto RUR Architecture, will present their firm’s recent and current work.

When: Thursday, October 25, 2011, 7:00 pm

4/ Between Landscape and Architecture

Join Diana Balmori and Joel Sanders, who will discuss with Benjamin Aranda, Nicholas de Monchaux, Anthony Vidler, and Marion Weiss the idea of dissolving traditional distinctions between building and environment. Reception to follow.

5/ A Photographic Exploration of Rising Chinese Urban Space through People

Architect and photographer Hai Zhang will present a series of photographs taken in several Chinese cities from 2008-2011. As the project focuses on experiences and emotions of ordinary people to examine the rising Chinese urban space. It is intended to bring awareness about how we understand the city’s responsibility to its residents beyond the propaganda of progress.

When: Saturday, October 29, 2011, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Where: Queens Museum of Art, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, NY

Price: $5 suggested admission
