1/ TAG Heuer Competition Project Presentations

The Swiss luxury watch company TAG Heuer invited Parsons product design students to reinterpret the iconic Monaco watch. The partnership and competition—a first for TAG Heuer—involved students collaborating in the design studio under the mentorship of TAG Heuer master watchmakers. Three winning teams were selected, and the top design may be produced as a limited-edition piece.

When: May 16 – May 22, 2011, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

2/ Ishtar Film Screening and Conversation with Elaine May

Come for a screening of Ishtar followed by a rare appearance by director Elaine May. May will be joined on stage by Museum of the Moving Image Chief Curator David Schwartz to explore the unusual history of this film.

3/ Talking Books: Making Policy Public

The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is a local non-profit organization that uses design and art to make visible the policy and planning decisions that affect our every day life. The moderated discussion will address the ins and outs of the largely invisible redistricting process. Reception to follow.

When: Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 7:00 pm

4/ Workshop: A Room of One’s Own: Defining Personal Spaces through Photography

Develop your own unique sense of place with renowned photographer Mayumi Terada in a three-part photography workshop focused on personal vision. The series concludes with a mini-exhibition and in-class critique with the instructor. Open to all levels. Bring your own camera.

When: Sunday, May 21, 2011, 10:00 am (Three-part series: 5/21, 6/4, 6/11)

Price: $240 Japan Society members, seniors & students, $270 general public. Fee includes exhibition entry.

5/ Joint Vision: Collaborative Glazing with Kate Missett

From Judy Chicago and Audrey Cowan to Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, artistic collaborations have resulted in some of the most exciting creations. In that spirit, bring your best friend, brother, sister, or that special someone to this collaborative workshop to craft a special and unique wearable object. Artist Kate Missett will help participants translate their own drawing, painting and printing designs into wearable ceramics works of art. Using a layered glazing technique, each participant will fuse colors of their choosing onto a ceramic tile, which will then be made and worn as a brooch or necklace.

When: Sunday, May 21, 2011, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Where: Museum of Arts & Design, 2 Columbus Circle, NYC

Price: $10 program fee includes museum admission and all materials

7/ Parsons Festival Block Party

The Parsons Festival Block Party marks the final weekend in the two-week series of events, exhibitions, and programming. A day-long celebration features creative projects, performances, interactive programming, and a variety of other events.
