1/ Sign Painting in Immigrant Communities in the USA

The talk will illustrate how certain ethnic populations in the USA have used their traditional color preferences in signage to address specific audiences. Signage in English, Spanish, French, and Creole will be shown. Styles of hand lettering will be discussed, in depth, and examined in the context of 20th-century American sign painting as it was practiced during the era of an established unionized apprenticeship system.

3/ New Designs in Seoul

Seoul will soon house the tallest and the largest buildings in the world. KPF Associates, H Associates, and Du Nam Choi will present their works in Seoul with variety of scales, architectural ideas on designs for local/international culture, and amalgamation of new project into historic urban context.

4/ Making Ideas Happen: Key Insights on Creative Execution with Scott Belsky

5/ Fresh Dialogue 27: Design Dualities

Young Designers always have reacted towards trends, simultaneously often creating new ones. Four great examples are Mike Perry, Keetra Dean Dixon, Andrio Abero and Timothy Goodman. This year for Fresh Dialogue, AIGA/NY has invited these four to participate in a panel discussion to show their approach to work, both commercial and personal.

6/ After Class: The First Steps of the American Designer

Caught between a culture ambivalent on the values of design and a slowing economy, young designers face an enormous challenge post graduation. Moderated by Annie Block, editor of Interior Design magazine, designers Dror Benshetrit and Todd Bracher will discuss how they navigated their own path to success. A portfolio review for students with the designers will follow.

7/ Bill’s Design Talks: YouTube Co-Founder Chad Hurley

Chad Hurley, co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer of YouTube, will join Bill Moggridge to discuss the role of the revolutionary video sharing platform within the changing world of mainstream media. Their conversation will examine how YouTube was designed and developed and how mainstream media has expanded and evolved in a world of emerging new patterns of media consumption.

8/ Jugaad Urbanism Film Series: Bombay Summer

Film screening of Bombay Summer (2009), an award-winning feature film set in contemporary India. The film explores the fleeting nature of friendship in a society undergoing rapid change. Q&A with director Joseph Mathew will follow.

9/ Black Studies in Art and Design Education

Black artists and designers are at the cutting edge of contemporary culture, but Black communities and their cultural histories continue to have a marginal presence in art and design schools. This conference is a forum for reflection on the troubling gap that persists between the significance of Black creativity in global culture and its relative insignificance in art and design education.
