1/ Extreme By Design: Design Thinking Workshop
Led by Stanford Institute of Design facilitator Adam Royalty, the Watch+Design Workshop is a fast-paced, 90-minute exercise that starts with a design challenge and covers five steps in the Design Thinking process (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test). Short clips of the film, Extreme by Design, provide real-world examples of each step.

2/ Breakfast Club: Typefaces Made to Order
Struggling to find that perfect typeface? Or maybe just a few small tweaks to an existing face would make your design sing. Creating a typeface may sound daunting, but it can be a fluid process if you work with seasoned pro. Font Bureau’s Dyana Weissman will demystify the process, covering such topics as the collaborative workflow, developing an original concept, modifying an existing design, and ethical concerns.

3/ Extreme by Design: Screening
Extreme By Design is a documentary that follows a group of Stanford University business, engineering, and medical students as they design innovative products and services to solve problems of the world’s poor using a revolutionary creative process called Design Thinking. After this sneak preview of the upcoming PBS film, there will be a Q&A/discussion with the filmmaker and design experts about the fast-growing role of Design Thinking in engineering, education and business.

4/ Jonathan Hoefler

7/ Interaction Design Open House
Spend your Friday evening considering your plans for fall 2014, and getting to know the leading thinkers and practitioners in the interaction design field. “MFA in 30 Minutes,” will feature SVA MFA Interaction Design faculty teaching the MFA program in 30 minutes. In addition, see student work and the studio space, hear the mission and philosophy of the program, then relax for reception and conversation where you can ask more informal questions.

8/ Home Truths: Photography and Motherhood
Book signing of Home Truths, a book accompanying a traveling exhibition, which examines contemporary interpretations of one of the most enduring subjects in the history of picture-making: the image of the mother. Focusing on the work of 12 international photographers, it challenges the stereotypical or sentimental views of motherhood handed down by traditional depictions, and explores how photography can be used to address changing conditions of power, gender, domesticity, the maternal body and female identity. 9/ Two-Day Letter Together Workshop with Jessica Hische
In this two-day, intensive workshop, the fifteen participants and hosts will work collaboratively to create a full vector alphabet by the end of the day. Through several rounds of group critiques and concentrated work sessions, the alphabet will evolve from idea to sketch to refined vector execution.

10/ If You Could Build It
NYC PREMIERE Partners Emily Pilloton and Matt Miller seek to affect change through design. When they bring their innovative curriculum to struggling Bertie County, NC, they not only teach practical problem-solving and construction skills to their high school students, but offer hope for business rebirth in the form of a final project that will benefit the entire community. 11/ Tiny: A Story of Living Small
NYC PREMIERE A couple sets out to construct a livable 130-square foot house—no bigger than a standard parking space—part of a growing movement that is conscious of our environmental impact and rethinks our need for more and more stuff. As their small project slowly takes shape, they—and other tiny-structure dwellers—reflect on sustainable design, material culture and what is truly essential to make a house a home.
