1/ Comenius, Marconi & Zapf Book
In 1976 the International Typeface Corporation celebrated their announcement of a new typeface designed by Hermann Zapf in a folding specimen, claiming it was his first type since he “put the finishing touch“ to Optima Medium Italic “some ten years ago”. Besides ITC Zapf Book two other lesser-known typefaces by Zapf were also released that year: Berthold Comenius and Marconi for Hell Digiset. This lecture focuses on all three textfaces by taking a close look at their origin, by comparing them with their contemporaries and by paying attention to their letter shapes and characteristics based on the different technological circumstances in an era on the verge from photo to digital.

2/ Sharon Helgason Gallagher, “The Book and the Bicycle”
Why do we enjoy riding bicycles? Why do we take pleasure in reading books? In both cases, the design of the object is an excellent fit for both the human body and the human mind. Sharon Helgason Gallagher of ARTBOOK | D.A.P. looks at the book from a functional design perspective and challenges digital forms of content publishing and information design to take the human body—and its sense of pleasure—into account.

3/ Designers in the Nursery
Noted historian, curator, and critic Leonard Marcus will discuss the long and vibrant tradition of graphic artists as creators of illustrated children’s books. Highlights will include examples of work of Vladimir Lebedev, Kurt Schwitters, Leonard Weisgard, Bruno Munari, Leo Lionni, Eric Carle, and Frank Viva.

4/ Murals of New York City
The first book to curate over 30 of the most influential and impressive murals found within all five boroughs. From the Victorian sensibilities of the early 1900s to the graffiti-influenced art of Keith Haring, these iconic artistic treasures act as a cultural guide to the city and its citizens over the past century.

5/ Typeface Documentary Movie Screening
Screening of Typeface, an independent documentary film about visual culture, technology and graphic design, centered around the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

6/ Power Shift: Becoming an Artist Entrepreneur

8/ Susan S. Szenasy in conversation with Debbie Millman
Susan Szenasy, Editor and Publisher of Metropolis magazine in conversation with Debbie Millman, host of the radio show Design Matters discussing Szenasy’s distinguished career over the last three decades as a design critic, journalist, and educator.

9/ Making Sense of Syria
