1/ Breakfast Club: Every Trick in the Book
Have a great idea for an illustrated book you want to get published? Want to learn how to make an attractive proposal and get it into the right publisher’s hands? Join author/illustrator Julia Rothman as she shares her successes and mistakes.

2/ Ernst Reichl, Type Director and Book Designer
Ernst Reichl: Wide Awake Typographer is an exhibition of book covers and spreads from Reichl’s designs for Knopf, Random House, Holt Rinehart & Winston, and others, as well as examples of his commissions for famous authors such as Gertrude Stein and Joyce Carol Oates, children’s books, and work honored by the AIGA 50 Books competition. Reichl was officially a type director while at the advertising agency Foote, Cone & Belding in the middle of the 1940s; this exhibition showcases his work in book design, the typography of publishing that occupied most of his career. TDC members are invited to a special event presented by the Friends of the Columbia Libraries, a talk by Martha Scotford, with Ruth Reichl.

3/ Brand New Conference
The Brand New Conference is a one-day event organized by UnderConsideration, focusing on the practice of corporate and brand identity — a direct extension of the popular blog, Brand New. The conference consists of eight sessions offering a broad range of points of view with speakers from around the world practicing in different environments, from global consultancies, to in-house groups, to small firms.
When: Friday, September 13, 2013, all day

4/ “Design The Life You Love” Workshop

5/ Getting to Know the “Newly Mobile Senior Set”
With over 40 million users, the “newly mobile senior” demographic has the time, money and desire to learn travel, communicate and share and rely on their devices for entertainment, education, wellness and financial wellbeing. But, do UX professionals truly understand who they are? This event will explore a historically unaccounted for, and yet important segment of the mobile market.

7/ New Walk City: How PentaCityGroup Designed NYC’s Street Maps
New York City’s Department of Transportation is introducing WalkNYC and Citi Bike to the city’s streets this year. Pedestrian wayfinding signs and Citi Bike kiosks which both feature new maps of the city are popping up across the boroughs and re-envisioning our image of this city. Wendy Bell (T-Kartor), Hamish Smyth (Pentagram) and David Gillam (City ID), as representatives of design consortium PentaCityGroup, will reveal the process their team of information designers, policy makers, GIS experts, industrial designers, engineers and urban omnivores followed to create a comprehensive, beautiful and functional wayfinding system.

8/ 99U Pop-Up School
The 99U’s inaugural Pop-Up School is 3 intensive day-long learning program about super-charging your creative skill set. Three essential topics covered are career development, entrepreneurship, and brand & digital strategy. Programs consist of talks from leading creatives and entrepreneurs, a mix of mentor sessions, interactive workshops, and skill-building booths to get hands-on with the learning process.

9/ ¿Hablas Diseño? Design Goes Social
Latino creative professionals re-evaluate design’s role and purpose in an increasingly politicized environment. Cynthia Lawson, Pablo Medina, and Quilian Riano, will present case studies in which design has been used to negotiate the relationship between politics, commerce and the Latino community: reflecting a growing trend in design process and design thinking for social innovation.

10/ NY Art Book Fair
NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines. Last year, the fair featured 283 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from twenty-six countries, and was attended by more than 25,000 people.
When: September 19–22, 2013

11/ Cal Schenkel + Gary Panter in Conversation
Conversation with iconic artists Gary Panter and Cal Schenkel.
