The Swiss standard for posters measures 90 x 127 cm (35.5 x 50.25 in). Though Niklaus Troxler’s work honors this, he fills these dimensions with a dynamism that is genuine and inspired.

On Thursday night, a large group of curious spectators gathered at Cooper Union’s Great Hall to indulge in an 80-piece retrospective and lecture of Troxler’s work. The pieces that he presented are regarded as superb specimens in their pithy originality and visual robustness. As he began to speak humbly about the origin of each piece, you could sense the eager anticipation for the opening that soon followed. After a short impromptu question-and-answer, everyone ventured to the gallery above. The syncopation of Bob Stuart and Craig Harris Duo masterfully filled the exhibition, harmoniously reflecting Troxler’s use of rhythm, composition, imagery, and typography. His passion for jazz and design has enabled him to create a truly unrivaled body of work.

If you were unable to attend Thursday night’s lecture and exhibition you can visit the gallery at Cooper Union. It will be open to the public through Friday 13 July. Hours of operation are: Monday-Friday 11PM-7PM and Saturdays 12PM-5PM.
