Gary Hustwit’s documentary tribute to a single typeface, which turns out to be a lovely survey of design history from the 50s to today, is coming to the IFC.

Helvetica’s first theater run will begin at the IFC on September 12th and run for two weeks. Ticket sales and event details will eventually be available at IFCcenter.com.

Experimental Jetset Helvetica

While we can’t guarantee good-hearted heckling from the audience by Ed Benguiat or purist proclamations by Massimo Vignelli from the stage, there is promise of guest designers to address the audience on opening weekend. If you didn’t get a chance to see the AIGA/NY-supported initial screening at Parsons back in April or are aching to again hear Erik Spiekerman say “some men like to look at girls’ bottoms, I like to look at letters,” you’ll probably want to put this on the calendar.

  • A review by Ellen Lupton in Metropolis
  • Armin Vit’s lukewarm review at Speak Up
  • Gary Hustwit on CNN and a plethora of other media coverage over at the official site.
