On Tuesday, May 24, at the Galapagos Art Space, Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas told the story of their leap into entrepreneurship with the launch of Brooklyn based Blue Marble Ice Cream. The moderator was Eric Demby, co-founder of the Brooklyn Flea.
In 2007, Alexis Miesen and Jennie Dundas opened Blue Marble ice cream. They had no prior business experience, but loved ice cream and had passion. They saw a need for a local, organic, environmentally-friendly ice cream shop and took the leap. They were a hit in the Boeurum Hill community, and opened a second shop in Prospect Heights.
Two months later, Jennie met Odile Gakire Katese, known as Kiki, who approached her with an idea. Kiki explained the lack of joy and leisure in the lives of the Rwandan people. What better way to meet this need than through the magic of ice cream! Jenne went to Ruanda to help set up shop, and in June 2010 Inzozi Nziza opened in Butare, Rwanda. This experience has become a non-profit venture for Blue Marble, called Blue Marble Dreams.
Closing the discussion, award-winning filmmaker Rob Fruchtman, shared a sneak preview of his feature-length documentary chronicling the making and impact of Sweet Dreams.
Attendees were then treated to a scoop of Blue Marble ice cream!
