If you’re a current design student, recent graduate, new to the city, or looking to make a transition in your career, this free event will help you get acquainted with the dynamic world of design in New York City. Jill Nussbaum, Executive Director of Product Design, The Barbarian Group, and Mimi O Chun, Design Director, General Assembly, will cover key events, companies, people, current issues, and career paths in the industry. After the event, all are encouraged to network with other attendees.
JILL NUSSBAUM, THE BARBARIAN GROUP
Jill’s a passionate believer in the transformative power of well-conceived and smartly designed digital experiences. She’s had the opportunity to work at the forefront of developing technologies, and collaborate with brands that make a big impact in the world — Nike, GE, Samsung and Virgin, to name a few.
As the Executive Director of Product Design at the Barbarian Group, Jill works with clients to develop long-term product experiences, and oversees the User Experience group. Previously she was an Executive Creative Director at R/GA, and a key player behind the design of the Nike+ platform, which was named “Campaign of the Decade” by the One Club and Adweek. In her role, she oversaw the evolution of the platform to include Nike+ Fuelband, Nike+ Basketball and Nike+ Training. Jill is active member of the NY design community and enjoys teaching, public speaking, writing, and advising young designers and tech start-ups. She currently teaches in the Interaction Design MFA program at the School of Visual Arts, and is a contributing writer for PSFK. She has given talks at SxSW, AIGA/NY, IxDA, and General Assembly. Jillʼs work has garnered dozens of industry awards, including the Cannes Titanium Lion, Cannes Cyber Lion, Clio Interactive Grand, and D&AD Black Pencil. Her work also has been featured in I.D. magazine’s Annual Design Review, Contagious magazine, Communication Arts, Digiday and FWA’s mobile site of the Day. She has juried several competitions including the One Show, Communication Arts and the Clios.
MIMI O CHUN, GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Mimi leads design and brand efforts at General Assembly across its myriad offline and online experiences. Prior to joining GA, Mimi led project teams at user-centered design consultancies including the New York office of IDEO and IA Collaborative in Chicago, and has worked across a range of industries including education, media, retail, financial services, technology, and hospitality. Mimi is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and received her MFA from Yale University.
